Zugspitze

Zugspitze

in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

The Zugspitze is the highest mountain in Germany and well worth a visit.

The journey to the Zugspitze by cable car and cogwheel train

There are a total of 3 ways you can reach the summit:

Taking the cogwheel train directly from Garmisch to the Zugspitze

Would you like to get on directly in Garmisch-Partenkirchen? The white and blue cog railroad starts at the Zugspitze station in GAP and stops at several stations (Hausbergbahn, Alpspitzbahn, Kreuzeckbahn, Hammersbach) until the mountain route starts in Grainau. The round-trip fare for adults is 61.00 euros (in summer).

A cable car ride you will never forget!

Only around 20 minutes from Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the cable car to the Zugspitze, which was newly built in 2017, starts at Eibsee station and takes guests to the summit in just 7 minutes. Even the ride in the floor-to-ceiling glass cabin is an experience in itself! The prices for adults are 61 euros (in summer) for a round-trip ticket, but there are discounts available for families.

Combined adventure trip to the Zugspitze and back

How about the combination package? Book the Zugspitze round trip with three different trains and enjoy unforgettable experiences! You start at the Zugspitzbahnhof in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and travel via Grainau to the Zugspitzblatt. You pass through the 4.5-kilometer-long Zugspitze tunnel and can gather unforgettable impressions along the way.

From the Zugspitzblatt, you continue with the glacier cable car. You will have reached the summit in just a few minutes – a souvenir photo with the golden summit cross is now a must! Now gather unforgettable impressions and enjoy the gastronomy before heading back down into the valley.

Now the new cable car will take you back to the valley in less than 10 minutes. The floor-to-ceiling glass cabins provide you with another breathtaking view of the mountain scenery. The Eibsee also comes into view once again, showcasing its beauty. From Eibsee, the cogwheel train will take you back to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, concluding a unique experience.

The price for the Zugspitze ticket is 61.00 euros (in summer), with discounts available for families and youths.

The Zugspitze in summer

The Zugspitze in winter

Our tourist information office will be happy to give you tips on how to walk up. The best time for this is from mid-June to early September.

Winter vacation on the Zugspitze

Due to its significant height of 2,962 meters, the ski season usually starts in November and extends until early May. The pure natural snow area is also very popular among tobogganers (sledders) during this season: Three toboggan runs and a family toboggan slope provide sledding fun and winter enjoyment for all ages. The necessary equipment such as sleds and helmets can be rented on-site.

For skiing enthusiasts, there are 20 kilometers of natural snow-covered slopes available. You can find the trail map via the following link:

A visit during the warm season is highly recommended as well. Everyone should experience the view from Germany’s highest point at least once: on a clear day, you can see all the way to Munich and enjoy the famous “4-country view” over lush green landscapes.

Summer tobogganing on the Zugspitze

Tobogganing is also available in a limited capacity during the summer. Guests can borrow a free sled at the toboggan slope and slide down the hill.

Hiking on the Zugspitze Glacier

For those looking to delve deeper into the ice, you can venture onto the “Glacier Experience Trail.” There are 5 different stations that showcase the diverse mountain world and are a true highlight for visitors of all ages. The hiking trail is best accessed from the Sonnalpin Glacier Restaurant, approximately a 15-minute walk away. Sturdy footwear is absolutely necessary here!

The Zugspitze for experienced mountain climbers

Of course, there’s plenty to offer for experienced mountain climbers as well. Here, it’s best to check with the tourist information for the current weather conditions and recommended tours.

The Alpinpark Zugspitze is an adventure for children.

Especially for children, the “Alpinpark Zugspitze” offers a lot: a climbing rock and a suspension bridge provide a little thrill for the kids. Of course, adults are welcome to climb on the rock as well.

Restaurants on the Zugspitze

On the Zugspitze, you have three restaurants offering culinary highlights: “Panorama 2962”, “Gletschergarten”, and “Gletscherrestaurant Sonnalpin”. There is also a spacious outdoor area available, allowing visitors to enjoy sunny days to the fullest.

The Panorama 2962 restaurant on the Zugspitze

The “Panorama 2962” restaurant has been completely rebuilt and serves top-quality traditional Alpine specialties typical of the region. The motto “The Best from 4 Countries” reflects the diversity of the menu: Italy, Austria, Switzerland, and of course Germany are represented with their finest dishes! The hosts place great emphasis on regional sourcing: ingredients come from within a radius of 250 km, ensuring true regional authenticity.

The Gletschergarten restaurant on the Zugspitze

The Gletschergarten restaurant also has a lot to offer: in its modern glass dome, you have a panoramic view of everything around you. During good weather, the dome can be opened, allowing you to dine under the open sky. An international cuisine awaits you, so stay tuned!

The Sonn Alpin restaurant on the Zugspitze

The “Sonn Alpin” restaurant is rustic and cozy. From small snacks to an extensive lunch as well as coffee and cake, you can find everything here. Changing daily specials and even vegetarian dishes are available daily in the popular self-service restaurant. Here you can also enjoy the sun in a deckchair and soak up the fantastic view of the mountains
