The Wieskirche

Wieskirche

in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

In the district of Wies near Steingaden lies the Wieskirche, one of the most famous Rococo churches in Germany. It was built by Dominikus Zimmermann from 1745 to 1754 and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. At the center of the church stands the “Scourged Savior,” in whose eyes a farmer’s wife discovered tears in 1738. This “miracle of the tears” led to the pilgrimages that have taken place since then and to the construction of the current church.
