Vacation with relaxation by the lake
Relaxation by the lake
The lakes around GarmischChiemsee
Lake Chiemsee, also known as the “Bavarian Sea,” is the largest lake in Bavaria and the third-largest lake in Germany, covering an area of 79.9 km².
The lake has three islands: Herreninsel, Fraueninsel, and Krautinsel. Construction of King Ludwig II’s Herrenchiemsee Palace began on Herreninsel in 1878. The palace was intended to be a replica of the Palace of Versailles and was completed only after the king’s death.
It is speculated that the lake, the town of Chieming, and the entire Chiemgau region are named after a count named Chiemo.
Starnberger See
The fifth-largest lake in Germany is also the second-richest in water due to its depth. A walk along its shores is an experience, especially in good weather, when the Alps rise on the southern horizon of the lake. The legendary fairy-tale king Ludwig II also met his death in Lake Starnberg, under circumstances that remain unresolved to this day.
Achensee
The largest lake in Tyrol forms the border between the Karwendel Mountains and the Brandenberger Alps and is situated 380 meters above the Inn Valley near Jenbach in Tyrol. Noteworthy are its excellent water quality and its water temperature, which, as a mountain lake, does not exceed 20 degrees Celsius. It is also referred to as the “Tyrolean Sea.”
Pflegersee
Pflegersee is a popular excursion destination located above Garmisch-Partenkirchen. It is beautifully situated at the foot of the Königstand mountain. The Berggasthof Pfleger See, located right on the lake’s shore, invites visitors to stop by and enjoy a meal.
Ferchensees
The water of Lake Ferchensee is very clean, located southwest of Mittenwald, and reaches temperatures over 20 degrees Celsius in summer. A guesthouse and, additionally in summer, a kiosk with boat rentals invite visitors to relax. A regular bus service operates to the lake.
Riegsee
One of the cleanest lakes in Upper Bavaria is Lake Riegsee. It warms up very quickly and often reaches swimming temperatures as early as May. Because it freezes completely for weeks in winter, it becomes a paradise for ice skaters, ice stock sport enthusiasts, and ice sailors.
Kochelsee
Located on the edge of the Bavarian Alps and belonging to the municipalities of Schlehdorf and Kochel am See, is Lake Kochel. It is connected to the higher-lying Lake Walchensee through a hydroelectric power plant, which can also be visited.
The lake offers opportunities for swimming and boating, cycling or hiking around it, and crossing it with a small boat that connects the municipalities.
Walchensee
Lake Walchensee, one of the deepest and largest alpine lakes in Germany, belongs to the municipality of Kochel am See, which also partially encompasses Lake Kochel. Due to its beautiful location and appearance, Lake Walchensee has been used several times as a filming location and backdrop for movies. Surfers and sailors particularly appreciate the lake for its consistent thermal winds and make extensive use of it. The Walchensee Hydroelectric Power Plant, which connects Lake Kochel and Lake Walchensee, is also worth seeing.
Plansee / Heiterwangersee
In the Ammergau Alps, Lake Plansee and Lake Heiterwangersee are located and connected by a 300-meter-long canal. Both lakes enjoy a very good water quality. Emperor Maximilian I already appreciated the abundance of fish in the lakes and used the surrounding beautiful area for hunting trips. Today, the lakes are also used as reservoirs by the Reutte power station, and the water level is lowered in winter.
